Program

Day 1
You will be collected in the morning between 8.00 and 8.30 am from your accommodation in the centre of Paramaribo. The bus journey to the small Atjoni harbour, accessible by dugout canoe, takes around 2.5 hours, during which you can experience Suriname’s colourful culture. You’ll pass through small villages and settlements of indigenous people and Creoles that characterise the landscape. Once you arrive in Atjoni, you can stretch your legs and enjoy lunch whilst the dugout canoe is loaded for the boat trip. You will then sail for approximately 3.5 hours along the beautiful Upper Suriname River to Jungle Resort Pingpe, although the duration depends partly on the water level. During this journey, you’ll see many villages along the river and can enjoy the stunning scenery. After arriving at the resort and settling into your lodge, you’ll have the opportunity to swim in the river or relax on the island. After dinner, you’ll meet the local staff and the guide will tell you more about Saramaccan culture and language, as well as interesting facts about the island and the surrounding area, after which the programme for the following day will be discussed.
Day 2
After breakfast, you’ll travel by dugout canoe to Pingpe, where your back-to-basics experience begins. Accompanied by your guide, you’ll walk deep into the unspoilt jungle, whilst the staff carry your food and drink. During the four- to five-hour walk, the guide will tell you about the fascinating flora, fauna and customs of the jungle. Upon arrival at a large creek, the simple Anjoemara camp awaits you. Here you can enjoy a swim and bathe in the crystal-clear water, catch an Anjoemara if you’re up for the challenge, or relax in a hammock with a book. After dinner, you’ll enjoy a cosy campfire and the serene tranquillity of the jungle, before being lulled to sleep in your hammock.
Day 3
During the day, you’ll be staying in the heart of the jungle. You can go on an extensive walk accompanied by an experienced guide, who will tell you all about the various medicinal plants, trees and animals along the way. Alternatively, you can cool off in the rapids or relax by the stream. For the more adventurous, there’s the chance to catch an Anjumara, which will then be prepared for you. After a day full of experiences, you’ll spend the night back at the camp, where you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the jungle.
Day 4
After breakfast and breaking camp, you’ll walk back to the village of Pingpe for around 3 to 4 hours. From there, a dugout canoe will take you back to the resort, where you can relax in the afternoon after the walk. After dinner, a special surprise awaits: the locals will treat you to an evening of culture featuring traditional song, dance and rhythm. The women from the village will become increasingly enthusiastic as you join in with this convivial evening. This activity is available for groups of four or more people.
Day 5
Early in the morning, you’ll travel by dugout canoe to the village of Semoisi, where you’ll visit the local primary school. Children from both villages attend this school. After this visit, you’ll return to Jungle Resort Pingpe for breakfast. In the afternoon, you’ll travel by boat to the village of Asindohopo on the Pikin Rio, home to the Granman people. You’ll take a walk around the village and visit the local radio station. Afterwards, you’ll head to the stunning Tapawatra Sula, a set of rapids where you can swim and enjoy a natural massage bath. You’ll have a packed lunch on one of the rocks in the rapids. On the way back to the resort, you’ll visit the Djumu health centre with your guide – a central medical post serving the wider area. After dinner, you’ll go on an evening trip in a dugout canoe. The guide will let the dugout canoe drift with the current, allowing you to enjoy the silence and the wonderful sounds of the jungle, the starry sky and spotting caimans.
Day 6
After breakfast, you’ll travel downstream by dugout canoe to Atjoni, a journey of around 2.5 hours. En route or once you arrive in Atjoni, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch, after which you’ll transfer to the coach for the approximately 2-hour journey to Paramaribo, where you’ll arrive.
