Deep in the Amazon rainforest of Suriname, the exotic Awarradam Jungle Lodge & Spa is situated on an idyllic island near the Awarradam rapids. Just half an hour’s boat ride away lie the authentic villages of the Saramaccans, who have been preserving their West African traditions for over 300 years. During your three-day stay, you’ll explore the unspoilt rainforest on guided tours and enjoy the tranquillity of the jungle lodge. Pamper yourself at the traditional jungle spa and immerse yourself in the warm culture of the hospitable Saramaccans. The resort on the Gran Rio River is easily accessible: just an hour’s flight over the lush green landscape of Suriname.

Program
Day 1
You will depart from the local Zorg & Hoop airport in Paramaribo and fly to the Kajana airstrip, situated about 55 minutes further south. Upon arrival, the lodge staff will take you to the dugout canoe that will carry you across the Gran Rio to your holiday destination. After a 30-minute boat ride, you’ll reach Awarradam Island, situated at the foot of the rapids of the same name. Here, a welcome drink and a snack await you, after which you’ll meet the friendly Maroons of the Saramaccan tribe who run the lodge. During a tour of the island, you’ll discover the eco-friendly principles of the resort. You will then be taken to your lodge, where you can enjoy every comfort: a mosquito net protects you from insects, whilst solar power provides atmospheric lighting. Air conditioning is not necessary thanks to the cool evenings. Afterwards, the team will prepare the boat for a trip to Peti Island, where you’ll enjoy a lovely water massage and have lunch. Meals are cooked over a wood fire using mainly Surinamese ingredients. You’ll round off your first evening with a boat trip where you can spot caimans.
Day 2
You’ll get up early in the morning for breakfast, after which your guide will prepare you for a walk through the village. During the boat trip downstream, you’ll see how the river forms the lifeblood of the local community. Along the way, you’ll see local people fishing, washing clothes and doing the washing-up. Between the inhabited areas, you’ll enjoy the natural surroundings and, with a bit of luck, spot a caiman lying on the bank. From the jetty, you’ll take an extensive walk through various villages, where you’ll gain a good insight into daily life in a Maroon village. After returning to the resort, you’ll navigate the rapids and learn how traditional fishing is practised. In the evening, dinner will be prepared for you and the day will end with some enjoyable cultural activities.
Day 3
In the early morning, at dawn, you’ll take a short boat trip down the river and experience the jungle waking up in complete silence. After breakfast, you’ll go on an informative and adventurous jungle walk, during which your guide will explain the trees and plants and teach you how to recognise animals by their sounds and tracks. As you enjoy the unspoilt tropical rainforest, your attention will be increasingly captivated by the richness of nature. Before you leave, our staff will bid you farewell in the traditional manner, after which we will take you back to Kajana. From there, you will fly back to Paramaribo.
