Discover the majestic Jaw Jaw rapids, take an enlightening village walk and immerse yourself in the rich culture of the Saramak people, who keep alive age-old African traditions, from fishing and hunting to natural medicine and religion. Explore the lush forest with explanations about flora, visit the Ferulasi rapids and the village of Gunsi, sail a traditional canoe yourself and enjoy traditional fishing. End the experience with an optional, but unforgettable cultural show on request.

Yaw Yaw

Program

Day 1
You will depart in the morning for an exciting journey to Jaw Jaw, where you will arrive in the afternoon. Upon arrival you have the freedom to spend the rest of the day as you wish. Perhaps you choose to relax at the beautiful Jaw Jaw rapids, which is close to your accommodation.
Day 2
After breakfast you will explore the rainforest during a forest walk, followed by a fascinating village walk. Here you immerse yourself in the daily culture of the Saramaccans, who cherish age-old African traditions such as fishing, hunting, boat building and natural healing in the lush Surinamese jungle. After lunch you will visit the remote village of Gunsi, and in the evening you will enjoy an enchanting cultural show.
Day 3
Enjoy the surroundings for a while before returning to Paramaribo.

Comments

Transport starts by land, traveling by bus over partly unpaved roads to Atjoni (approximately 3 hours). There you transfer to a canoe, a motorized dugout canoe, which takes you to Jaw Jaw in about 1 hour, and vice versa.

Accommodation

Enjoy your stay at Djamaika tourist camp, which is located on the shore of Jaw Jaw village. This camp offers accommodation in several traditional cottages, each furnished with a number of beds equipped with mosquito nets. The shared showers and toilets are located outside the cottages for an authentic experience. Djamaika is a beautiful, but simple accommodation for travelers who are not necessarily looking for luxury.
