This tour

Overview

Galibi, a 4,000-hectare nature reserve on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Marowijne River in Suriname, is world-famous for its sea turtles, which lay their eggs at night during high tide. This unique ecosystem combines unspoilt beaches with authentic Caribbean indigenous villages, where traditional piaka canoes and fishing boats characterise the coastal landscape. Discover the rich heritage of local crafts such as basket weaving and traditional fishing. The two-day tour also takes you to French Guiana, where you’ll explore the fascinating history of the former Saint Laurent du Maroni penal colony.

What you will do

Activities

Enjoy the sprawling village along the beach, with its coconut palms, mango trees and traditional piaka canoes. This reserve is home to the world’s second-largest nesting beach for three species of sea turtle: the Krape (soup turtle), Aitkanti (leatherback turtle) and Warana (pygmy turtle). At night, depending on the tides, you can witness these turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. The tour also includes a visit to the historic prison at Saint Laurent du Maroni, where you can enjoy guided tours in French.

Program

Day 1
You will set off by bus from Paramaribo via the Commewijne district to Albina, which lies on the Marowijne River at the border with French Guiana. On the way, you will cross the impressive Wijdenbosch Bridge, which offers a magnificent view of the capital, and drive past the bauxite town of Moengo. There will be a few stops along the way to stretch your legs and use the toilet facilities. From Albina, you’ll travel north by boat to Galibi, arriving at Myrysji Ecolodge in Christiaankondre, which offers lovely views of the river. After checking in and being shown to your rooms, lunch will be served. In the afternoon, you’ll get to know the local people and their way of life during a walk through the village. After dinner, our guide will tell you about the highlight of the day: a night-time boat trip to Baboensanti, the sea turtles’ nesting beach, where you can observe these remarkable animals during the nesting season (mid-February to late July).
Day 2
After breakfast, you’ll have time to visit the local souvenir shop. You’ll then check out and return to Albina by boat. On the way, you’ll stop on the French side of the river, where you’ll take a short walk in St. Laurent. Here you’ll have the opportunity to take a self-guided tour of the local prison museum, where the famous Papillon was once imprisoned. You’ll then return to Albina, where you’ll enjoy lunch by the river before heading back to Paramaribo.
