Overview
Awarradam Jungle Lodge is situated approximately 225 km from Paramaribo on the Gran Rio River, near the "Awaadan" rapids. The traditionally built lodges offer comfortable accommodation with two beds under mosquito nets, en-suite facilities and hammocks overlooking the river. The surrounding villages, including Langu and Ligolio, are authentic Maroon communities where traditional culture, rituals and the protective "azanpau" still play a central role. Over the course of five days, you can take part in forest walks, village visits, singing and dancing performances, birdwatching, fishing, individual walks and visits to the local 'kostgrondjes'. A unique experience in the heart of the Surinamese jungle.

Activities
During this 5-day jungle lodge experience, you can take part in a variety of activities. Canoe trips require life jackets for your safety, and you’ll have free time to swim at the rapids. Forest walks include explanations of local plants, whilst village visits bring you into contact with the local culture through singing and dancing performances, including demonstrations of handmade souvenirs by villagers. You can choose from organised activities or go for walks, birdwatching, fishing and paddling on your own. Visits to the 'kostgrondjes' are available for an additional fee with a guide. For extra relaxation, the jungle spa offers a range of treatments.

Program
Day 1
You will depart from the local Zorg & Hoop airport in Paramaribo and fly to the Kajana airstrip, located about 55 minutes further south. Upon arrival, the lodge staff will take you by dugout canoe across the Gran Rio to Awarradam, an island at the foot of the rapids of the same name. This journey takes about 30 minutes. On arrival, we’ll welcome you with a snack and a welcome drink, after which you’ll meet the friendly Maroons from the Saramaccan tribe who work here. During a tour of the island, you’ll discover the eco-principles of our resort. We will then take you to your lodge, where you can settle in. Afterwards, you’ll take a short boat trip to the island of Peti, where you can enjoy a refreshing water massage and your lunch. The lodge offers comfort with solar panels for lighting, a mosquito net and meals cooked over a wood fire using mainly Surinamese ingredients. You’ll round off your first evening with an atmospheric boat trip, during which you may spot caimans.
Day 2
You’ll get up early in the morning for breakfast, after which your guide will prepare you for a walk through the village. During the boat trip downstream, you’ll see how the river forms the lifeblood of the local community. Along the way, you’ll see local people fishing, washing clothes and doing the washing-up. Between the inhabited areas, you’ll enjoy the natural surroundings and, with a bit of luck, spot a caiman on the bank. From the jetty, you’ll take an extensive walk through various villages, where you’ll gain a good insight into daily life in a Maroon village. After returning to the resort, you’ll navigate the rapids and learn the traditional fishing method. After dinner, you’ll enjoy a cultural evening to round off the day.
Day 3
Early in the morning, as day breaks, you’ll take a short boat trip down the river. In complete silence, you can experience the jungle coming to life. You’ll then continue on to Okkobergie, where you’ll climb a mountain.
Day 4
After breakfast, you’ll visit a farm where you’ll learn how the local people traditionally grow and harvest crops. The afternoon is entirely at your leisure, during which you can relax in a hammock on our grounds.
Day 5
On your final day, you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast and have the whole morning to yourself. Before you leave, our staff will bid you farewell in the traditional manner.

The traditionally built lodges feature balconies with stunning views of the river and are constructed from local materials that preserve the jungle atmosphere. Each lodge has two beds with mosquito nets, an en-suite bathroom with cold running water and hammocks on the balcony. The accommodation is lit by solar power, meals are served in the dining room and you can relax in the jungle bar-lounge.
