During our three-day expedition along the Maratakka River, we’ll have excellent opportunities to spot manatees and giant otters. The numerous Mauritius palms lining the banks provide an ideal habitat for the colourful blue-and-yellow macaw. Our camp is strategically situated close to the confluence of the Maratakka and Nickerie rivers, a perfect spot for spotting the impressive giant toucan. This unique waterway offers an unforgettable experience of nature in the heart of the Amazon region.

Program

Day 1

At around 8 o’clock in the morning, you and your group will set off from Paramaribo towards Wageningen in the Nickerie district. The journey takes place in a comfortable taxi, and along the way you can stop at interesting locations at any time. Think of a beautiful viewpoint or a spot where you can spot the rare scarlet ibis. Around lunchtime, you’ll arrive in the village of Wageningen, where your local guide will be waiting for you. This experienced guide knows the area inside out and will be delighted to show you round. After a delicious lunch, there’ll be time for a short boat trip on the water. You’ll return to your accommodation for dinner, after which you’re free to spend the evening as you wish. You could opt for an evening walk, head out onto the water again, or simply enjoy a cosy campfire under the starry sky.

Day 2

You can go on boat trips on both the Maratakka River and the Nickerie River. For the best chance of sightings, we recommend setting off early in the morning, when the jungle is waking up and you have the best chance of spotting the impressive giant toucan. Alternatively, you can also go on a boat trip at the end of the day to see the last birds in the sunlight and watch the nocturnal animals come to life. During the boat trips, you’ll be on the lookout for manatees, giant otters and possibly even the giant toucan on the Nickerie River. In the evening, you can explore the nearby nature trail and look for nocturnal animals such as frogs and snakes, which makes for a unique experience.

Day 3

After lunch on the last day, we’ll set off for the city, where you’ll arrive between 5.00 pm and 6.00 pm.
