Program

Day 1
The journey to Apiapaati begins with a drive of around three hours to Atjoni, where the roads end. From there, you’ll travel by boat for about three hours up the river to the island of Apiapaati, although the journey time may vary depending on the water level. Upon arrival, you’ll have the chance to explore the island whilst a delicious meal is being prepared. On the island, you can relax in a hammock, enjoy the local cuisine and try your hand at fishing. A popular activity is swimming in the river amidst the currents, which many guests find particularly appealing.
Day 2
After breakfast, you’ll set off by boat with an experienced guide to Djumu, where there is a medical post. You will then sail further into the jungle for an exciting trip to Pineapple Mountain, where you can enjoy a magnificent view of the jungle and, during the season (September), sample a delicious fresh pineapple. To cool off, you’ll visit the beautiful Tapawatra Waterfalls, where you’ll have lunch and spend a relaxing afternoon. In the evening, the guide will take you on a night-time expedition to spot wildlife, such as tarantulas, snakes and caimans. As darkness falls, you can enjoy the mesmerising sounds of nocturnal wildlife.
Day 3
After breakfast, you’ll set off by boat with an experienced guide to the Saramaccan village of Gran Slee, on the opposite side of Apiapaati, where a fascinating village walk awaits you. During this walk, you’ll discover the rich Saramaccan culture and pass by the village’s largest sacred tree, about which your guide will provide detailed information. You will then visit further villages on foot and learn more about the unique customs and traditions of the Saramaccan people. After the village walk, you’ll continue by boat to Gran Dan, which is about a 30-minute journey. Here you’ll enjoy lunch and spend the afternoon taking part in exciting water-based activities. On the strong current, you’ll go rafting on an ‘airhead’ under the supervision of an experienced guide, and, following the guide’s instructions, you can also jump into the water wearing a life jacket, depending on the water level. The day ends around the campfire, where you can reflect on this special experience under a beautiful starry sky.
Day 4
This is your final morning on Apiapaati. After a delicious breakfast, you’ll pack your bags for the return journey to Paramaribo. Lunch will be provided en route, so you can relax and enjoy this final day on the island that has become so dear to you.
