Program

Day 1
You’ll begin your nature and culture experience by setting off from Paramaribo heading south. Along the way, you’ll pass impressive giant trees and villages dotted along this route. After about 190 kilometres, you’ll reach the small mooring point at Atjoni, where your exciting dugout canoe trip begins. You’ll travel for around 50 minutes by motorised dugout canoe to the comfortable Anaula Nature Resort at the foot of the Ferullasi Falls, where you’ll be staying for the night. During this boat trip, you’ll experience breathtaking natural scenery, various Marron villages and pass through the turbulent JawJaw rapids. After a light buffet lunch in the beautiful dining room, you’ll check in, after which you can explore the resort. In the morning, you’ll travel by dugout canoe to a nearby swimming spot in the Ferullasi rapids, where you can relax, swim and enjoy a natural whirlpool. Before dinner, you’ll set off on an exciting adventure to spot caimans. During this night-time boat trip, you’ll enjoy the stunning starry sky and the total silence of the Amazon rainforest.
Day 2
After breakfast, we’ll travel by dugout canoe to the village of Nieuw Aurora for a village walk. During the tour, you’ll meet the local people and discover their unique way of life, traditional customs and practices. We will visit the mission station, which includes a church, a primary school and a medical centre. At around 4.30 pm, there will be a walk through the forest on the resort’s island, where you will learn more about the local medicinal uses of plants. The island also contains remnants of the immortality rituals carried out here by Ronnie Brunswijk’s jungle commandos during the civil war in 1986 – a fascinating reminder of this unique piece of history. After a delicious dinner, you are free to spend the evening as you wish, for example by visiting our lobby.
Day 3
On Sunday morning, you’ll have the opportunity to attend a church service in the village and experience an authentic Saramaccan service. You are free to spend the afternoon as you wish: relax in one of our hammock camps, take a walk around the island and listen to the sounds of nature, or enjoy the view over the water from a plateau. Reading a book by our swimming pool is also a pleasant alternative. After dinner, you can enjoy a cultural dance performance featuring traditional dances such as the Seketie, Awasa and Bandamba (available for groups of at least 8 guests). Our guide will explain the meaning and background of these authentic dances.
Day 4
The morning is entirely at your disposal. After lunch, we’ll sail back to Atjoni, from where we’ll travel by bus to Paramaribo.
