The tour in short

This is mainly a trip intended for older participants. The trip has numerous highlights, such as the old town of Paramaribo with its colonial wooden houses. You can enjoy the beautiful wooden cathedral/basilica, the palm garden, beautiful temples and colorful markets. In addition, inland offers an exploration of Maroon territory, and the many natural locations with an abundance of bird and animal life provide an unforgettable experience. You also visit old plantations, which gives a vivid impression of the past. Everywhere you go, the Dutch language is spoken.

PART 1

1st day: Arrival in Paramaribo
Upon arrival at Zanderij, Suriname's international airport, an employee will be ready to guide you to the Royal Breeze hotel on the Waterkant in Paramaribo where the first nights have been reserved.

2nd day: City tour of Paramaribo
To get used to the atmosphere, environment and climate, we start the trip with a city tour of the capital. Highlights include Fort Zeelandia, the wooden cathedral, the Jewish synagogue next to the mosque, Independence Square and the market with exotic fruit and vegetables. The afternoon is free to spend. Overnight stay in Paramaribo, including breakfast.

3rd day: - Jodensavanne/Stone Island
After breakfast we go south and visit Jodensavanne. This is the former home of Sephardic Jews and their slaves in Suriname, about 50km south of Paramaribo. The place is located in the Para district near the Cassipora Creek, a tributary of the Suriname River. The first Jews came to Suriname from Europe around 1640 and settled on the banks of the Suriname River. They established sugar cane plantations and kept slaves, and the community grew exponentially until it eventually housed more than 700 people. In its heyday, there were a total of about 115 Jewish plantations in Suriname, where thousands of slaves worked.
After this visit we drive to the dam where you have a beautiful view of the dam and the reservoir.

4th day: - Stone island/Brokopondo lake
Today we will take a trip on the lake and sail through the drowned trees. You are also free to take a canoe onto the lake.

5th day: - African culture in the Bush Bush: Anaula
Anaula is an island in the Suriname River. It is located in the Upper Suriname area, approximately 170 km from Paramaribo and approximately an hour's sailing from a departure point south of the Brokopondo reservoir. The island is a nature reserve, but a small part is designed as a resort.
At the end of the morning we leave by bus to Atjoni where we transfer to a canoe to be taken to Anaula. We sail approximately 50 minutes by motorized canoe to the comfortable Anaula Nature Resort, located at the foot of the Ferullasi Falls, where you will also spend the night. During this cruise we encounter breathtaking nature and various Maroon villages. We also pass the turbulent Jaw-Jaw rapids.
After a light buffet lunch in the beautiful dining room, check-in will take place.
After this you will have the opportunity to explore the resort.
In the morning we sail by canoe to a nearby swimming facility, in the Ferullasi rapids, where we can relax, swim and enjoy a natural bubble bath.

6th day: - Various activities Anaula
After breakfast we sail by canoe to the village of Nieuw-Aurora for a village walk. During the tour of the village you will get to know the local people and their unique way of life and their traditional customs and customs. We visit the mission post, which includes a church, a primary school and a medical post.
Around 4:30 PM we take a walk in the woods on the island where the resort is located. During this forest walk you will receive an explanation about the local medicinal use of plants. During the internal war in 1986, Ronnie Brunswijk's Jungle Commandos visited the island for their immortality rituals. The remains of these rituals on the island remind us of this unique piece of history.
In the evenings you can enjoy a delicious dinner. After dinner we can enjoy a cultural dance performance. Traditional dances such as the Seketi, Awasa and Bandamba will be performed for us. Our guide will explain the content and meaning of these dances.

PART 2

7th day: Free day at Anaula
You can spend this day as you wish, the hammock camps are there for your convenience. A walk on the island is recommended, where you can listen in peace to the sounds of our islanders or relax above the water on a plateau. Reading a book by the beautiful swimming pool under the gazebo is also an attractive idea.

8th day: Back to Paramaribo
You can spend this morning entirely according to your own needs. After lunch we sail back to Atjoni, where the van awaits you to take you back to Paramaribo.

9th day: Day off
A day to further explore the city and relax.

10th day: Plantation and Museum Bakkie
During this tour you will hear the history of the Bakkie plantation. You will experience old sugar mills in the jungle, wells and locks on this tour. A small museum will certainly surprise you. Breakfast and lunch included today.

11th day: Departure to the west of Suriname
After breakfast you leave Paramaribo for Nieuw-Nickerie, in the northwest of Suriname. Along the way we visit some historical places in the districts of Saramacca and Coronie. We make a stop in the town of Groningen, where the first Dutch farmers from the province of Groningen settled in 1845. We then go to Boskamp for a short walk and a possible visit to a traditional fish smokehouse after a light lunch. The journey continues past Coronie, known for its many coconut parwa honey, and the town of Wageningen. Upon arrival in Nickerie we check in at the hotel. In the evening we visit the sea wall with a beautiful temple and on the other side is Guyana. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included today.

PART 3

12th day: Bigi Pan
After breakfast we visit the market in Nickerie, which is much livelier and more pleasant than the one in Paramaribo. You can also take a walk through the village and tour the area before we arrive at the Akira jetty around noon to leave for Bigi Pan. In the evening we will watch the scarlet ibises and flamingos take up their roosts. Today breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

13th day: Bigi Pan
The morning starts with coffee or tea on your balcony at 5:30 am, so that you can see the birds leaving their roost by 6:30 am. A special moment to spot the colored ibises and egrets! Breakfast is served at 8 am after returning from the bird tour. Then you are free to kayak, canoe, fish, swim or simply relax. After lunch there is another birding trip around 4:30 PM to watch the birds fly back to their roost. A magical spectacle where thousands of birds color the sky. Today breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

14th day: Bigi Pan - Paramaribo
After the second overnight stay you will leave the Bigi Pan nature reserve after lunch. We leave for Paramaribo and along the way we visit places such as Wageningen and Coronie. You will return to Paramaribo around 6:00 PM with a wealth of experiences. Today breakfast and lunch are included.

15th day: Commewijne tour with overnight stay in Frederiksdorp
We take the bus to Leonsberg and sail on a primitive tent boat on the Suriname and Commewijne rivers. Sights include the open-air museum in Nieuw Amsterdam, Rust en Werk plantation, and Margaretha plantation. At the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers there is a chance to spot dolphins. The tour ends in Frederiksdorp, an old police post founded in 1873 on the Frederiksdorp plantation, where almost 110 Javanese and Hindustani contract workers once worked here, previously there were about 200 slaves. Frederiksdorp has been expanded with beautiful cabanas and a swimming pool where we will spend the night. Today breakfast and lunch are included.

PART 4

16th day: Frederiksdorp
After breakfast you have the option to take a bike ride to the east. The guide from Frederiksdorp will take you on a bike ride towards Plantage Kronenburg. During the tour you will pass several old and sometimes overgrown plantations, locks and canals. The guide will tell you about the history and diverse cultures in the district. In the afternoon you can take an optional boat trip in the wetland area to see what the plantations used to look like and what the rice fields were like. Breakfast included today.

17th day: Mariënburg - Plantation de Peperpot
After breakfast you cross the Commewijne River, where the van awaits you. We then visit Mariënburg, a former sugar factory, before continuing to "De Plantage Peperpot", an old coffee and cocoa plantation. Here you can stay in the old plantation house or in the restored officers' houses. In the evening we dine in an attractive restaurant. Today breakfast and lunch are included.

18th day: Peperpot Plantation - Paramaribo
After breakfast we take a walk on Plantation Peperpot, both over the plantation and through the adjacent forest where you can see many different plants and birds. After lunch we return to Paramaribo and move into the Breeze Hotel. Today breakfast and lunch are included.

19th day: Day off
Today you have a free day to spend as you wish. For example, you can relax on a terrace, do some shopping in the city or visit the Cotta mission museum or Fort Zeelandia. Breakfast is included.

20th day: Departure to the Netherlands
The morning is free at your own leisure. This is followed by a transfer to Paramaribo airport for the return journey to the Netherlands. Breakfast is included.

21st day: Amsterdam
Arrival at Schiphol Airport.
