Day 1
Day 1 You fly from the local airport Zorg en Hoop to the airstrip at the Indian village Palumeu, about 75 minutes flying time south of Paramaribo. Upon arrival you will be welcomed by our staff. Our holiday resort Palumeu has the same name as the adjacent village of the Trio and Wajana Indians. After checking in to your cabin, our staff will take you to the beautiful Palawa island for a picnic lunch. Afterwards you can enjoy a lovely swim in the cool river water. In the afternoon you will visit the Indian village Palumeu with our guide for a first introduction to the current way of life of these oldest inhabitants of the Amazon forest. You will soon recognize the eco-principles of our resort. Our staff are expert Trio and Wajana Indians. Your jungle lodge is built in traditional style, the cool evenings make air conditioning or a fan unnecessary, but you will enjoy the comfort of a mosquito net. For the atmospheric lighting, solar energy is used and the meals are prepared on a wood fire with mainly Surinamese ingredients. After dinner, the guide tells you more about the oldest inhabitants of the Amazon rainforest, the Indians and their habitat, the tropical rainforest.
Day 2
Day 2 Perhaps the call of howler monkeys was your natural alarm clock. Today you will get to know the tropical rainforest. Before sunrise we sail down the river and turn off the engine to experience the awakening of nature in all silence and to look for a nice place for our breakfast. We continue our journey to the starting point of the forest path to Potihill, a granite hill that you can climb at the end of the forest walk. During the korjaal trip over the Tapanahony river and the walk you will certainly see different birds such as flying macaws or parrots and toucans and perhaps also monkeys or an otter. At the top of the Potihill you will be rewarded with a great view over the jungle. Lunch is served at Palumeu. In the afternoon an experienced archer will teach you how to shoot with a bow and arrow. It looks simple, but hitting a target turns out to be quite an art. Try whether you are a natural talent. Dinner is at the lodge.
Day 3
Day 3 After breakfast we will take you by canoe to the Mabuka waterfalls for a day of wonderful relaxation. You can swim in the river, enjoy a natural massage in the waterfall and laze around in a hammock. For the active ones there is a forest walk through the jungle with information about trees, plants and animals along the way. The surroundings will contribute to the fact that you will not easily forget the barbecue lunch. In the late afternoon we sail back to the jungle lodge. After dinner our guide will take you for a trip on the river to enjoy the nightly jungle sounds.
Day 4
Day 4 In the early morning at dusk, we will float a bit down the river by boat and enjoy all the morning jungle sounds. After breakfast we will visit the Indian village of Palumeu. Along the way you can buy traditional, handmade arts and crafts. After lunch you will depart again by plane, now to the airstrip of Kajana, about 55 minutes flying south of Paramaribo. After arrival, the staff of the lodge will take you to the korjaal that will transport you over the Gran Rio to your holiday destination. It is a 30-minute boat ride to the holiday resort of Awarradam, an island at the foot of the Awarradam rapids. After “checking in” and meeting the staff, you can enjoy lunch. In the afternoon you can explore the resort and relax in the rapids. You will soon recognize the eco principles of our resort. Our staff on site are friendly Maroons from the Saramaccan tribe and your jungle lodge is built in traditional style. The cool evenings make air conditioning or a fan unnecessary, but you can still enjoy the comfort of a mosquito net. Solar energy is used for atmospheric lighting and meals are prepared on a wood fire with mainly Surinamese ingredients. In the afternoon we visit the beautiful rapids “Peti” located a few minutes by boat from the resort. You can enjoy a wonderful water massage there and float back to the resort with your life jackets on or paddle back with the canoe. On the first evening you will receive more information about this unique area in which the Maroons have managed to preserve their old West African traditions.
Day 5
Day 5 In the early morning at dusk, we will float a bit down the river with the boat where you can experience the awakening of the jungle in all silence. After breakfast you will make an educational and adventurous 'jungle walk'. While you enjoy and feast your eyes on the untouched tropical rainforest, the guide will explain about trees and plants and how you can recognize animals by their sounds and tracks. After lunch you will visit the rapids 'Peti'. Now we will stay the whole afternoon and you can swim there, paddle in a korjaal and enjoy the beautiful view of the rapids from a hammock. After dinner the guide will give you more information about the unique flora and fauna of the Amazon rainforest.
Day 6
Day 6 Before sunrise we walk through a piece of primary rainforest to the riverbank and sail upstream. After about half an hour of sailing we turn off the motor of the canoe. We drift back with the current of the river and can fully enjoy the jungle sounds and fauna. We return to the resort for breakfast and you have the rest of the morning until lunch to explore the lodge and the surrounding rapids. You can also be pampered in the traditional Jungle Spa on the island. After lunch in the afternoon you will visit the local community. You will get to know the local culture better. During the boat trip, half an hour downstream, you will experience what it is like on the river that is the lifeline for the local community. On the way you will see people fishing, washing and doing dishes. Between the inhabited areas you can enjoy nature and with a bit of luck you will even see a caiman lying on the bank. From the landing place you will take an extensive walk along various villages. On the way you will get a good impression of daily life in a Maroon village. At sunset we sail back to Awarradam.
