Overview

Discover the brand new Akira Overwater Resort in Bigi Pan, Suriname's most recent pearl. This unique resort with 16 detached lodges, a cozy restaurant and an attractive lobby is built entirely on the water. The lodges and main building are connected by wooden walkways, making the resort look like a 'tilapia', a common fish in Bigi Pan, from the air. This area, with an area of 68,000 hectares of land and water, includes swamps, mangrove forests and lagoons. For bird watchers, Bigi Pan is a true paradise, with no fewer than 72 permanent bird species, including the majestic Scarlet Ibis. Every year, about 50 bird species from North America migrate to this area, such as the osprey and several species of terns.

New Nickerie

Program

Day 1
You take an approximately 4-hour drive from Paramaribo to the jetty in Longmay, Nickerie. Your transport can be parked free of charge on the grounds of the Akira jetty, albeit at your own risk. There is a toilet available at the jetty. The boat leaves at 1:30 PM. After about 10 minutes on the Nickerie River you reach the slipway where everyone has to get out of the boat. The boat is towed over the ramp or you transfer to another boat waiting in the canal. All belongings must then be transferred to the other boat. Then you sail through the 8 km long Jamaer canal where birds can be spotted. This trip takes approximately 45 minutes. You will arrive at Akira Over Water Resort around 3 p.m. where a late lunch will be waiting for you. After lunch you can check in and get some rest before an excursion is scheduled around 5:00 PM. During this excursion you will spot birds flying to their roosts and enjoy the sunset on the water. Dinner is served between 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM.
Day 2
The next morning you have the opportunity to go sailing early and watch birds fly away from their roosts while you wait for the sunrise. Breakfast is served at 8am. Then you can enjoy activities such as canoeing or stand-up paddle boarding, which are available for free. You can also take a boat trip to the wetlands, take a mud bath if the water level allows it, or just relax in the "Bird Tower" or lobby and enjoy the surroundings.
