Day 1
You will depart from the local Zorg & Hoop airport in Paramaribo to the airstrip of Kajana, about a 55-minute flight south of Paramaribo. Upon arrival, lodge staff will take you to the korjaal that will transport you further across the Gran Rio to your holiday destination. It is a 30-minute boat ride to the resort of Awarradam, an island at the foot of the Awarradam rapids. On arrival, enjoy a snack and welcome drink and then start getting to know the locals and take an island tour. You will soon recognise the eco principles of our resort. Our on-site staff are friendly Maroons from the Saramaccan tribe. Afterwards, you will be directed to your lodge, where we will prepare the boat for the trip to Peti Island in the meantime. You can enjoy a wonderful water massage there and you will have your lunch here. The cool evenings make air-conditioning or a fan unnecessary, but you will enjoy the comfort of a mosquito net. Solar energy is used for ambient lighting. Meals are prepared over a wood fire, using mostly Surinamese ingredients. On the first evening, you will enjoy a boat trip, where you can spot caimans.
Day 2
You will rise early in the morning for breakfast, where the guide will prepare you for a village walk. During the boat trip, half an hour downstream, you will experience what it is like on the river that is the lifeline for the local community. During your cruise, you will see how local people fish, wash clothes and do their dishes. Between inhabited areas, you can enjoy nature and, with a bit of luck, you may even see a caiman lying on the bank. From the mooring you will take an extended walk past several villages. Along the way, you will get a good impression of daily life in a maroon village. After this, you will sail back to the resort, where you will enjoy the rapids and learn how fishing is done in traditional style. In the evening, dinner will be prepared for you, the evening ends with fun cultural activities.
Day 3
In the early morning (dusk), we float down the river a little by boat where you can experience the awakening of the jungle in complete silence. After breakfast, you will take an educational and adventurous jungle walk. While you enjoy and feast your eyes in the pristine tropical rainforest, the guide will explain trees and plants and how to recognise animals by their sounds and tracks. Before departure, our staff will bid you farewell in traditional fashion. We will take you back to Kajana. From there, you will fly back to Paramaribo.
